On Sunday 8th March, 8 members of the East Berks Club travelled to Swindon to take part in the spring tournament, held in the bright and spacious head office of the Nationwide Building Society.

Three of the eight played in Division A.  Richard Spencer did best, finishing fifth with five wins from seven games, winning the ratings prize (with a performance of 32 points above his start rating) and also qualified for the finals of the National Scrabble Championship which will be held in Bristol in early October.

The remaining five all played in Division B.  Hepzi Rodrigues finished second, with six wins from seven games (she often plays well at this tournament!), and she, too, qualifies for the finals of the NSC.   It was also the first ever tournament for newish club member Joy Wade.  Division B was a tough division for a first tournament, and Joy finished in a creditable 14th place.

Well done to Helen, Hepzi and Charles for winning their respective divisions. Here is the final tables. Thanks to everyone for taking part.

A WIN is worth 10 points, a DRAW 5 points. Sadly nothing for a LOSS.

If you beat a player one Division above you, you get a 10 point bonus (WIN-BON). If you have beat a player 2 divisions above you get a 20 point bonus.

If anyone, winner or loser, in any division,  exceeds their average score they will accrue a 5 point bonus. (AVG-BON).

Four members of East Berks travelled to the Isle of Wight for the annual tournament.

The tournament is actually 2 round-robins back-to-back with promotion and relegation between divisions after the first tournament.

For the first tournament Graham played in A (and subsequently got relegated to B), Helen played in B (finished third and got promoted to A), and Tricia and Maureen both played in Division C. Maureen finished mid-table, but Tricia despite being one of the lower ranked players in her division stormed through winning the Division with 8 wins out of 10 (+328 spread). Well done to the Helen and Tricia!

In the second tournament Tricia and Helen found the going harder in their promoted divisions but both achieved their start rating standard. Maureen again finished mid-table in her division, and Graham won Division B with a game to spare! ((9 wins +539). Well done to Graham!

The hotel is right on the sea-front and the weather was just kind enough to have a short walk between games enjoying the sea air!

56 players recently attended the Ilford Round Robin on 26 January.

Richard Spencer was East Berks' sole representative and played in Division C. Despite losing an early game, Richard was leading his Division prior to the last game, and although he suffered a loss in that game, he still won the division comfortably (6 wins and +252 points of spread). Well done Richard!

(Sorry no pictures!)

Best improver for the 1st quarter of the year is Evelyn Wansbrough, ahead of Maire Bennett and Kathy Smith.  Welcome to new member Mary Twomey.
