Over the weekend of the 16/17 November 60 players took part in the UK's Winter Matchplay Championships in Milton Keynes. Most if the players were UK based, but some of the participants had travelled from all over the world and were treating this as a 'warmup' for the Mattel Scrabble World Championships being held a few days later in Torquay.

The sole East Berks Player to participate at Milton Keynes was Richard Spencer who was rated as the 13th best player (out of 18) in Division B.

Richard played well above rating for all the tournament, rarely dropping out of the top 3, and despite losing a couple of games late on in the tournament managed to secure a worthy second place. Well done Richard !  (Photo courtesy of Nicky Deco)

Over the weekend of 9/10 November two one day tournaments were held in Grantham run and hosted by Nuala O'Rourke in memory of her late husband, Mike.

Tricia Walker from East Berks travelled to the event and competed in the Warm-Up on the Saturday and the Main Event on the Sunday.

She finished third in her division on the Saturday, just missing out on a prize. On the Sunday, Tricia performed even better winning 6 out of 8 games and finished second.

Well done Tricia on your performances of the weekend.

Over the weekend of 4-5 October two East Berks Scrabble Players took part in the National Scrabble Championships.

A World Class field assembled in Warrington (players flew in from America and Sweden to participate) and lots of tough high scoring games took place. Over the weekend Wanda won 6 out of 16 and Helen won 5 out of 16. To give some idea of how high the standard was - twice Wanda had 6 (SIX) bonus words laid against her in a single game, and Helen lost one game having scored 472 points ! Phew!

Wanda and Helen prepare for battle in Round 4 of the National Scrabble Championships 2019

In the Plate competition (for those players that hadn't qualified for the NSC Final), Graham finished fourth, again in a tough division. Had he won his last game (instead of a 250 point loss), he would have finished second.

Graham thinking hard near the end of a game

A thoroughly enjoyable weekend even though the results didn't quite go East Berks players way.
